In situations where the credit card terminal isn't functioning, and an internet connection is present, the terminal may need to be cleaned. Typically, the terminal will issue a chip malfunction error in these situations.
Please note, these cleaning instructions are intended for managers, supervisors, or maintenance personnel.
To clean a magnetic swipe terminal, wrap a credit card with a thin cloth or microfiber cloth. Slowly wipe the cloth through the magnetic swipe slot several times to remove dirt and debris.
To clean a chip reader, use canned air to blow out any debris from the chip reader slot. Take care not to continuously blow into the slot for an extended period of time, as the canned air will begin to condense and blow ice particles into the chip slot. Alternatively, a toothpick or other small implement may be used to swipe out any large pieces of debris.
A smart cleaning card (https://www.amazon.com/Waffletechnology-Smart-Cleaning-Card-KW3-EMVP10/dp/B01CIOGFKE) may also be purchased and used to clean the chip slot.
